Beef Steak Club at Chophouse – Sydney CBD

February 23, 2012

I never won medals as a child. I was always that kid who ended up with a certificate of participation rather than 1st, 2nd or 3rd *collective “nawwwwww” sadface*. Don’t get me wrong, I was always proud of my certificate, it just wasn’t a medal, you know? When I arrived at Chophouse for their quarterly Beef Steak Club event, I was greeted by the lovely Belinda who was our host for the evening. She quickly handed me a glass of Taltarni Brut Taché Tasmania 2009, and I was introduced to Karina Dambergs, Senior Winemarker at Taltarni. This lady knows her stuff! I’m a wine lover (mostly bubbly), but I would by no means call myself a wine connoisseur. I like what I like and regardless of price, vintage, or type of grape, if I’m not a fan, I’m just not a fan. The Taché however was delicious! Taché is...

SOY Japanese Restaurant – Bondi

SOY Japanese Restaurant – Bondi

Its no secret that Stud and I are massive Japanese fans. Of all cuisines, its def our fave 🙂 so fresh, reasonably healthy (depending on what you order of course) and just so damn tasty!! So when we were out in Bondi on the hottest day in summer to date (well, to that date anyway), preparing ourselves for the Sculptures by the Sea, we wanted something filling yet light enough that I wouldn’t get a stitch – I’m prone to stitches post meal, but that’s another story. Anyway, we walked past SOY and thought it looked really cool, had a quick glance at the menu and we were sold. We arrived at around 12pm and it was pretty dead. Really just a few other diners and us. It looked like we missed the rush though as about 25mins later, the place was buzzing and people were waiting for a...

Sushi Hon – Sydney Westfield

Santa has come and gone for another year and I hope all of you had a wonderful day with family, friends, food, and Michael Buble (of course). Stud and I did the usual family lunch, stuffed ourselves silly and then came home to watch Love Actually and have toast for dinner lol. Boxing Day was spent in the city. First time ever for both of us actually braving the Boxing Day sales. Never. Again! It was a nice day out but not massively relaxing haha. We did manage to slip in a quick lunch at Sushi Hon as Stud was craving a Japo fix. I didn’t actually realise until after but apparently, Sushi Hon has the longest sushi train in the southern hemisphere. I have to say, it didn’t look to massive when we were there but we were seated right at the front so didn’t go in too...

The Meeting Point – Haymarket

Have you ever eaten tripe? I have to say, pre-foodieness, I was so anti offal and anti anything exotic really. Post foodieness, I am so keen to try new and wonderful things! I’d actually seen Heston do tripe and take it to the streets on one of his shows and the public really liked it. I think that’s the go with most food really, as long as its cooked well, anything can be delicious! Stud and I haven’t had much experience with Taiwanese food so it was like foodie fate when the lovely people at Food Morning asked if I would like to go and review The Meeting Point in Haymarket. Would I? Ummmm we’ve met right? Hell yeah!! Admittedly, it took us a little while to find the place – going all around the inside of Market City and then pretty much a loop of the outside, I...

High Tea @ Aki’s Indian – Woolloomooloo

I do love a girly catch up. I feel like if there are ladies, catching up on the goss and really just life in general, then high tea is in order. But there are only so many times you can do high tea before you are trying the same sandwiches, the same scones and the same petit four. Ok, usually the petit four is the different element depending on where you go, but you get my point! So, what are the girls to do when they want something different, but still dainty? Aki’s! I had seen a few reviews quite a while back about Aki’s but it was a newsletter from Lime & Tonic that prompted me to get my butt in to gear and actually book it. Unfortunately, the day we had booked, was actually a miserable day with rain, clouds and umbrellas as far as the eye...

Platform 7 – Sydenham

Platform 7 – Sydenham

Sydenham is a suburb that you don’t necessarily think of when it comes to cafes. Well I don’t anyway. Stud always refers to Sydenham as a train station and nothing else as the only time he has ever been, is to change trains on his way somewhere else. Don’t judge him, he’s not from here 😉 but it is actually really close to our home so when the lovely people at Food Morning offered us a breakfast deal at Platform 7, who are we to knock it back? We arrived just after 10:00am and as the inside of the café was full, sat outside. It’s not a large place, probably about four tables inside seating a total of around 10 people and then three small tables outside. The one thing I would say is that being Sydenham, the flight path is right above you so it does get quite...

Brasserie Bread Cafe – Banksmeadow

Brasserie Bread Cafe – Banksmeadow

I have been harassing Stud about going to Brasserie Bread for breakfast ever since I did their Sourdough course. The café smelt amazing and every dish that went past while I was waiting, looked perfect! We headed over Sunday at around 11am and it was already pretty packed although we only waited a few minutes for a table. Just enough time to point out the brownies to Stud and for him to surprisingly agree on taking a couple home with us. What? Really?? After looking at the menu and trying to decide between savoury and sweet, we finally decided to get two savoury dishes that we were both eyeing off and just go halvies. The Poached Eggs with Smoked Trout and Parsley and Feta on Toast ($12), and Crispy Bacon and Poached Egg with Avocado and Tomato on Wholemeal Toast ($12). Stud ordered a skinny weak cap with two...

Whimsical Cakes – Intro Design Cupcakes – Dolans Bay

Von and I have been going somewhat crazy with the cooking courses lately. What with the Brasserie Bread course and the 5 others we have bought online (and not completed yet haha) with those daily deals I’m addicted to, we have definitely been keeping ourselves busy. This course was for beginners wanting to learn how to decorate cupcakes. Now admittedly, I’m not a huge lover of fondant. I appreciate how it can create beautiful masterpieces (or somewhat ok birthday cakes) and love the technique involved in forming fondant in to art, I’m just not a fan of its flavour. I’m a buttercream girl through and through. Just ask every baker in Sydney who we’ve been to see about a wedding cake 😉 we’re slightly picky haha. Nevertheless, we were up bright and early for our 9am class and luckily, left a little earlier because for some unknown reason (I...

Tokonoma – Surry Hills

Tokonoma – Surry Hills

I subscribe to every meal deal website available to Sydney. No really. So on a daily basis, there will be at least one deal that will take my fancy. Being the impulse buyer that I am, but then still being wary of over-spending/over-eating, I forward each “worthy” deal over to Stud to see the verdict. About a week or so ago, fed up with my constant spamming, he simply replied “Unsubscribe!” Well, I never! Thankfully this Tokonoma deal made it in before his opt-out. Being in Sydney’s South West, it’s not as often as we’d like that we get over to Surry Hills for dinner. We usually choose a little more local for transport purposes. Ok, its not France or anything, its just that Newtown for example, is a little less faffing about for us to get to and from so when we do go, we’re reminded how it...

Time to Vino – Darlinghurst

It’s been a while since our last girl’s night and this time, we wanted to go big. Stud was out for the night so the girls and I decided a night out in Kings Cross was the way to go. Upon searching, I came across Time to Vino and thought the name suited us perfectly so booked immediately. Time to Vino is on the corner but the entrance is via Pennys lane and upon entry, is a very warm and inviting place. It’s actually really perfect for a date. The lighting is very soft and romantic and with their “Waiting for friends” menu (another way of stating Entrée or snacks), it would be perfect to get a few dishes and share. I arrived a little late with a few of the girls but the rest of our party were there and already enjoying some Vino which they all really...
