Sushi & Sashimi Masterclass – Ocean Room, Sydney

Sushi & Sashimi Masterclass – Ocean Room, Sydney

Living in Sydney, we can often take our surroundings for granted. Always on our way somewhere – usually in a hurry – we are so concerned with where we are going, that we don’t bother to look around us while we’re getting there. Sydney really is a gorgeous place. I have noticed this more so lately and its really never more apparent than when you’re by the water. Sun bursting through the roof to floor windows, Sydney’s harbour and Opera House on one side and the finest fish money can buy on the other. I’m at Ocean Room at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay, and am surrounded by other Sydney food bloggers and we are in for a treat. Chef Raita Noda – Ocean Room’s executive chef – has graciously offered to give us a sushi and sashimi masterclass (*squeeee*). Chef Raita came to Australia in 1990 from...

SOY Japanese Restaurant – Bondi

SOY Japanese Restaurant – Bondi

Its no secret that Stud and I are massive Japanese fans. Of all cuisines, its def our fave 🙂 so fresh, reasonably healthy (depending on what you order of course) and just so damn tasty!! So when we were out in Bondi on the hottest day in summer to date (well, to that date anyway), preparing ourselves for the Sculptures by the Sea, we wanted something filling yet light enough that I wouldn’t get a stitch – I’m prone to stitches post meal, but that’s another story. Anyway, we walked past SOY and thought it looked really cool, had a quick glance at the menu and we were sold. We arrived at around 12pm and it was pretty dead. Really just a few other diners and us. It looked like we missed the rush though as about 25mins later, the place was buzzing and people were waiting for a...

Sushi Hon – Sydney Westfield

Santa has come and gone for another year and I hope all of you had a wonderful day with family, friends, food, and Michael Buble (of course). Stud and I did the usual family lunch, stuffed ourselves silly and then came home to watch Love Actually and have toast for dinner lol. Boxing Day was spent in the city. First time ever for both of us actually braving the Boxing Day sales. Never. Again! It was a nice day out but not massively relaxing haha. We did manage to slip in a quick lunch at Sushi Hon as Stud was craving a Japo fix. I didn’t actually realise until after but apparently, Sushi Hon has the longest sushi train in the southern hemisphere. I have to say, it didn’t look to massive when we were there but we were seated right at the front so didn’t go in too...

Japanese mushroom risotto

What’s your sure-fire hangover cure? Bacon and eggs? A run along the beach? More booze? Mine is avocado. “Avocado????” Avocado. A beautiful sourdough bread toasted in the oven and then coated in fork mashed avocado, topped with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper. My new thing however is said cure, topped with some pan fried (in butter of course) mushrooms. I can’t seem to get enough of mushrooms these days and even if we don’t have avocado (*sadface*), I’ll top my sourdough in mushrooms and either some pecorino or fresh herbs, you know, depending on my mood, or how hungover I am….. I love trying as many new mushrooms as I can but tried to do a stir-fry with a few Asian mushrooms and in my naivety, chucked them all in at once :/ Stud definitely wasn’t a fan. Like a mother with a funny looking child, I...

Tokonoma – Surry Hills

Tokonoma – Surry Hills

I subscribe to every meal deal website available to Sydney. No really. So on a daily basis, there will be at least one deal that will take my fancy. Being the impulse buyer that I am, but then still being wary of over-spending/over-eating, I forward each “worthy” deal over to Stud to see the verdict. About a week or so ago, fed up with my constant spamming, he simply replied “Unsubscribe!” Well, I never! Thankfully this Tokonoma deal made it in before his opt-out. Being in Sydney’s South West, it’s not as often as we’d like that we get over to Surry Hills for dinner. We usually choose a little more local for transport purposes. Ok, its not France or anything, its just that Newtown for example, is a little less faffing about for us to get to and from so when we do go, we’re reminded how it...

CafeIsh – Surry Hills

CafeIsh – Surry Hills

Ever since starting my blog, I’ve naturally been on Twitter. The two go hand in hand and although I may not tweet as much as I probably should (coming in at a very sad #416), I’m a total Twitter stalker. Early morning wake ups, train rides, bathroom breaks (oh too much information), I’m checking out what other people are eating, doing and just generally ranting. So ever since the beginning of Dining with a Stud, I have wanted to go to CafeIsh. How freakin excited was I when they did a meal deal?? I know, we really could go any time. It’s not far? Sometimes life just flies by and before you know it, you need a good excuse to go out to dinner. Excuse, check! Because we were on the voucher, we could choose between either 6:00pm or 8:30pm for our dinner. We normally eat between 6:30 and...

Wasabi Bistro – Surry Hills

Wasabi Bistro – Surry Hills

I’m a bit of a bargain hunter. I’m also somewhat of an impulse buyer. I am that girl who will go in to Priceline for nail polish remover and come out with a bagful of items I didn’t even know I needed. Stud will dispute that I actually don’t need them but I insist that I do need them, I just wasn’t aware of it until it was staring me in the face. In order to feed my daily shopping needs (or wants), I subscribe to numerous daily deal sites such as Spreets, Scoupon, etc and every now and then a deal presents itself that I just cant pass up. These were one of those times! Wasabi Bistro had partnered with Spreets and were offering a 7 course Japanese banquet for two including a glass of beer or wine each for only $49. Forty-nine dollars people!!! I immediately emailed...

Inaka Japanese Restaurant – Peakhurst

Inaka Japanese Restaurant – Peakhurst

Having recently moved away from the North Shore of Sydney (a plethora of culinary delights), Stud and I are still finding our feet in terms of what good restaurants are about and although we were previously spoilt for choice with Japanese cuisine (our favourite), it’s been few and far between of late so when we found Inaka, a five minute drive away, we were pretty excited to give it a go. Stepping back into the 80’s where restaurants stuffed your napkin in the wine glass for presentation; I am ashamed to say that we didn’t have high hopes for this one. We really were spoilt on the North shore. The place did have some charm though and the waitresses we SO attentive and really lovely. What we were longing for most was some good sashimi. A gamble seeing as our hopes were deflated but we were brave and ordered...
