Stud and I are pretty big fans of Vietnamese food but I have to say, apart from being frequent Pho eaters (especially in Winter) and the few of the starters (namely the rice paper rolls – NOM), we aren’t as knowledgeable on the cuisine as I would like. So when we were invited to try out Bay Tinh’s new Crows Nest restaurant, I was really excited to expand my Vietnamese horizons! Our reservation was at 7:30pm and a word to the wise who are travelling from a far (especially on a Friday night), go earlier to ensure you get parking. Even if you stop in somewhere for a drink beforehand, as it took us a little while to find a park and we very much relied on Stud’s previous “over the bridge” knowledge. With the weather getting a little colder, there’s nothing I love more than a good comforting meal. A beautiful warming soup, a little pork belly, some kick-butt dumplings – ok, my waistline isn’t too much of a fan of the colder months, but I’m running this show, mwahahaha! I had wanted to go to Bill’s for his famous ricotta hotcakes for, well, EVER! So when we stayed in Darlo the night of my hens, a hungover morning was prime time, or so I convinced Debs! A few months ago, after a drunken night in Newtown (as you do), a few of us were hungry (as you are, after numerous cocktails, beers and wine). As a follow on from the awesome tour that was Travelicious, we headed out for dinner and drinks at The Commons in Darlinghurst. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably walk past thinking it was a house party but as you walk through the gates and in to the venue, you are well aware, you’re in a Darlo bar. Wall to wall hipsters, low lighting and cocktails all round, it’s a great funky little place that prides themselves on their drinks. We headed downstairs to grab a cocktail each. So I’m slightly delayed with this post. Prepare to feel the wrath of my backlog as I try and catch up on the 100 posts and 5 billions photos that I need to express with you fine people. I never won medals as a child. I was always that kid who ended up with a certificate of participation rather than 1st, 2nd or 3rd *collective “nawwwwww” sadface*. Don’t get me wrong, I was always proud of my certificate, it just wasn’t a medal, you know? Its no secret that Stud and I are massive Japanese fans. Of all cuisines, its def our fave so fresh, reasonably healthy (depending on what you order of course) and just so damn tasty!! So when we were out in Bondi on the hottest day in summer to date (well, to that date anyway), preparing ourselves for the Sculptures by the Sea, we wanted something filling yet light enough that I wouldn’t get a stitch – I’m prone to stitches post meal, but that’s another story. Anyway, we walked past SOY and thought it looked really cool, had a quick glance at the menu and we were sold. We arrived at around 12pm and it was pretty dead. Really just a few other diners and us. On the eve of new years, I thought it might be appropriate for a quick and easy recipe, and a little look back at the year that was 2011. First up, a quick and impressive recipe for salted caramels that I used to make special Christmas treats for family and friends. Unfortunately, I didn’t actually take any “proper” photos of these and the last I had was the Instagram of the final unwrapped product, but you get the gist Salted caramels Adapted from epicurious Ingredients 1 cup thickened cream 5 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes 1 1/2 cups caster sugar 1/4 cup glucose 1/4 cup water Method Line bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking pan with non stick baking paper, then lightly oil paper. Santa has come and gone for another year and I hope all of you had a wonderful day with family, friends, food, and Michael Buble (of course). Stud and I did the usual family lunch, stuffed ourselves silly and then came home to watch Love Actually and have toast for dinner lol. Boxing Day was spent in the city. First time ever for both of us actually braving the Boxing Day sales. Never. Again! It was a nice day out but not massively relaxing haha. We did manage to slip in a quick lunch at Sushi Hon as Stud was craving a Japo fix.
