Chicken Wonton and Spicy Noodle Soup

Back when I was in high school, my dad did a Chinese cooking course. He was always so excited to come home and show off his skills, but they were wasted on mum and I. We didn’t like chilli, ginger, mushrooms, tofu…..well the list went on really. Fast forward 10 years (wow that makes me feel old!) and I can’t get enough of food, cooking and learning about both. I wish I had had gone to those classed with dad but I guess back then I would have failed to appreciate it. Im still on the lookout for a class we can go to together that’s in the area (St George or Canterbury) so if anyone out there has any suggestions, please let me know. Flicking through my magazines whilst completing my quarterly recipe cull, I came across a recipe for Chicken Wonton and Spicy Noodle Soup and decided...

Jamie Oliver – 30 Minute Meals

Jamie Oliver – 30 Minute Meals

I’ve been having slight blog withdrawals this past month. With work getting more hectic by the day and trying to plan a wedding, things have been super busy! By the time I get home from work or have had a day of details on the weekend, who has the time to whip up a gourmet meal for the family (mum and dad were over for dinner)? Well thanks to the in-laws and Jamie Oliver, I do :) lol! Flicking through my Christmas present from Stud’s parents once again, I was pretty impressed with all the recipes and decided to make Tray-baked Chicken with Squashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach. Would it really take 30 minutes or does it only take 30 minutes for a chef Mr Oliver? We’re about to find out! The recipe itself was actually really easy to follow and although there are two side dishes, it explained in...

A taste of Harmony – Chicken and veg sausage rolls

A taste of Harmony – Chicken and veg sausage rolls

Last week was Harmony Week at work which celebrates cultural diversity in the workplace. We were encouraged on “A Taste of Harmony Day” otherwise known as Friday, to bring in a dish from our cultural background. Easy enough, no? One would think so, however I wanted to make something I could be proud of, something what was easily transportable and something that was either Aussie or Scottish (OK so I was hijacking Studs heritage but it totally doubled my choices so don’t judge me). The more I thought about it, I realised you can’t really get any more Australian than a good ol’ sausage roll! I have a pretty bad weakness with them actually. I would never really buy them but placed next to me (or even on the other side of the room for that matter), I can never stop at just one….or eight. Something about that little...

1st birthday jungle cake

1st birthday jungle cake

I have never been a massive fan of children. Anyone who knows me is aware of this and I was very sure to prep my family at an early stage that there might not be any grandkids. So when my best friend Ariane and her husband gave birth to their beautiful baby boy Nathan and asked me to be his Godmother my first reaction was “Ummm are you sure??” apparently they were! A year on and it was the little mans first birthday party on the weekend so in his honour, I decided to attempt making a cake. Cakes I can do, fondant covered cakes with fondant animals, I wasn’t so sure about. I had told his mum I would make it and would do a “dry run” early on so I knew whether or not I could make it happen (and also whether or not she should call...

Roasted Garlic Olive Oil

Roasted Garlic Olive Oil

Years ago we decided to stop doing presents with family other than my parents and grandparents. So cousins, aunties and uncles were all eliminated. People get older, they’re harder (and more expensive) to buy for and Christmas is stressful enough. However this year, I decided to do a little homemade gift for the family that was simple, yet effective – garlic infused olive oil. I had found some cute little olive oil bottles from the local Go-Lo and went online searching for some ideas. Apparently it’s not as simple as I had once thought and in order not to give my family botulism poisoning; it had to be done a certain way. So after much investigation, I took the oil advice from here and added a twist to it to make it a Roasted Garlic Infused Olive Oil. I bought a good quality olive oil from a deli near...

Chocolate Orange Mousse

Chocolate Orange Mousse

Stud likes oranges. Well, he likes seedless oranges which is actually a lot harder to find that once thought but when I found them, I bought him a bag full to chow down on after dinner. I couple of oranges in to that bag, he decided he liked them, but not enough to eat them all the time hence a bag full was not warranted. Not wanting to waste anything, I tried here and there to add to dishes and with a couple of oranges left, we had friends coming over for dinner. I already had the main sorted so I decided to use them for dessert and make a chocolate orange mousse. I didn’t exactly allow for setting time when I was making these last minute but due to dinner taking longer than expected and us being stuffed after devouring it, the mousses set just in time. I...

2010 reflections + Marie Claire lasagne

Wow – 2011! According to old 70’s Sci-Fi movies we should all being flying our own personal spaceship car and wearing space age suits like The Jetsons. And although technology has come a long way, we are a far cry from our own personal robot maid. I’m still hopeful though This year we all decided to have a low key NYE with close friends, cocktails and pyjamas. OK we may all be averaging 30 but we can still have a sleepover like the best of them! We were all to bring a spirit each for the cocktails and a side dish to go with the copious amount of meat for the barbeque. Being fashionably late to discuss with the hosts what to bring, all salads were already accounted for so he had asked Stud to see if maybe I could make a lasagne (one I had previously made when...

A very Studdy Christmas

A very Studdy Christmas

I love Christmas. No, just so we’re clear, I mean I freaking LOVE Christmas. I had been whining since August about putting up our Christmas tree and finally in November when i was having a very bad day, Stud caved to make me feel better. Most people say its bad luck to erect the tree before December but I say phooey to that! How can anything to do with Christmas be bad luck?? This year was extra special. Not only was it our first Christmas in our new home that we actually own (hence wouldn’t have to worry about sticking/nailing/hanging decorations for fear of permanent damage and no bond back) but also, Stud’s parents were visiting from overseas and it would be his first Christmas with them in 12 years. I wanted to make the dinner as special as the occasion so had been planning the menu for a...

Cake pops

A good friend of ours is pregnant and when I found out there was a surprise baby shower for her, a billion thoughts went running through my mind and started fighting with each other on what to make. Thinking of trying my hand at fondant, I went out and bought some from a cake supply place near me and also grabbed some food colouring gel and powder to make it baby blue. Fast forward a month and who the hell has time? Well that’s not true. Its not that I didn’t have time, it’s that I was meant to do a ‘dry run’ prior to the event and kept putting it off due to, well, laziness. So about two weeks before the event I had narrowed it down to either the cake with fondant (risky without a dry run) or some simple cake pops. Ding ding! We have a...

Daring Cooks Challenge October 2010 – We’re on a Roll

There are very few food items that Stud and I come to a complete disagreement over. The Daring Kitchen has decided that the month of October, would be that time. Every time we go out for Greek or Lebanese, my eyes scour the menu for stuffed vine leaves (dolmades or dolma, depending one where you go) and although Stud would rather poke himself in the eye with his fork than eat them, I have a slight obsession with these little parcels. It’s not such a bad thing that he doesn’t like them – it means more for me right? So when I looked up this months challenge, I was over the moon as I had been meaning to make them for such a long time! I immediately posted my excitement on the Daring Kitchen wall and got to searching for prepacked vine leaves. I found some (amongst other things...
